I personally suggest wearing color! Color makes the photo look alive and vibrant. However, if you do wear natural or muted tones, think about adding a boost of color with accessories-whether it be a piece of statement jewelry for Mom or a scarf for the kids, these things can add the perfect pop of color.
I want your photos to look as natural and candid as possible. One important element to achieving this is for everyone to be in their own style of clothing. What I normally suggest is to coordinate color tones instead of being matching everyone!
Some color palate suggestions would be:
Warm color palate: oranges, reds, browns, or purples.
Cool color palate: light blues, greens, whites, or pinks.
One thing to keep in mind with the children is to make sure they are comfortable in what they are wearing!! Kids show their emotions on their face, so if they are uncomfortable it will show!!
Choosing your location!
I am a natural light photographer, so being outdoors is always my FIRST choice no matter what, but when I do photos at someone's home, I utilize natural light from windows and doors. When choosing your location, keep that in mind!
You may want to choose a location that is close to your home, or one that has a special meaning to your family! I have some "go to" locations if you are needing help deciding!!
Keeping the kids happy during the shoot!
I want to see happy faces for your pictures and the best way I have found to achieve that is to just let them be kids!!! If they want to run around the open field at the park, great! I will follow them around and maybe suggest ways for your to interact for great pictures! If they want to sit on a blanket and read a book, awesome! (Bring some of their favorite books or toys!) If they want to explore their surroundings, no problem!
I want them to be themselves and capture that...sometimes a bribe is needed too! =)
Should I bring anything with me?
Sure!! Bring anything that you want! You can bring your own props, bring books and toys for the kids, you can even bring a few changes of clothes if you wish!
Most importantly thought, BRING YOUR PATIENCE!!! Family photos require a lot of patience in between each shot...if you are stressed or annoyed, the kids will pick up on that!
I usually bring a blanket in case it's needed. I have a few props that I may bring to use "just in case". If you have ideas that you would like for your photos, discuss them with me before hand and I can make sure we have the right props the day of!
